2012 Park Day Activities

Two local organizations, Friends of Resaca Battlefield and the Stand Watie, Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp have joined forces to participant  in the annual Civil War Trust "Park Day" schedule for Saturday, March 31st, 2012 at the Resaca Confederate Cemetery off U.S. Hwy. 41 on Confederate Cemetery Road.

Park Day, now in its 16th year, is an annual hands-on preservation event created by the Civil War Trust to assist in the maintenance of Civil War sites. This year more than 100 sites in 25 states will take put in the effort. In Georgia 13 sites will participant.

Ken Padgett, spokesman for the two groups states, " This will be our counties second effort to honor the nation's Sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) Commemoration of the American Civil War. This time we will descend on the area with trash bags, weed eaters, rakes, and paint brushes, not muskets". We urge volunteers to bring work gloves, rakes, gas weed eaters, and any brush clearing tools.

Plans are to clean up the cemetery and surrounding lot of trash, clear brush, repair damaged head stones, and to repair and paint the interpretive bill board. If we have enough volunteers be will also clean up at the WPA Road Side Park on Hwy. 41 near the cemetery.

Time permitting, a short history of the cemetery and WPA Park will be given to the volunteers.

Work will start at 9 o'clock in the morning rain or shine until completed. Weather permitting we will have a small cook out for volunteers and Park Day t-shirts, patches, and a copy of Hallowed Grounds magazine  will be awarded for the first thirty volunteers that R.S.V.P. and sign up. All volunteers are asked to R.S.V.P. so that we can be prepared for the cook out. To R.S.V.P. call 706-602-1864 (leave message).
